If you opened the Gemini app on your Pixel this week, you might have noticed two things: a softer blue gradient and a nudge toward handing more of your routine tasks to an AI.
Google shipped a visual refresh to the Gemini app on Android just as I/O 2026 kicked off, but the makeover is more than skin-deep. The new homepage swaps a stark white-and-gray look for a blue-and-white gradient, enlarges the chat box and replaces the old suggestion chips with changing greetings — things like “the mic is yours” or “ask away.” Subtler shifts matter, too: the model picker is tucked under a chevron in the sidebar, the account and settings live behind that menu, and attachments and tools are combined under a single “+” button. Small changes, big nudge: the interface funnels users toward fewer, more agent-like interactions.
A prettier front end, a more agentic back end
The Android redesign largely mirrors what arrived on iOS earlier this month — albeit without the translucent “Liquid Glass” aesthetic some Apple users saw. Functionally, the redesign makes the model selection less prominent and condenses controls around the chat field. That tidy look is convenient, but it also makes some choices less visible: merging attachments and tools could trip up longtime users, and the model switcher’s new hiding place makes it easier to let the app pick for you.
That visual transition dovetails with something Google made central at I/O: Gemini moving from a clever conversational model to a platform for persistent, action-taking agents. Onstage, Sundar Pichai framed this as the start of an "agentic" era — the company announced Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini Omni Flash for multimodal generation (video included), and a personal agent called Gemini Spark that can run 24/7 on Google Cloud to do chores like hunting for deals, drafting messages, or keeping a running digest of your calendar and inbox.
Antigravity, Google’s agent development platform, is getting an update too. Antigravity 2.0 aims to let developers and power users orchestrate cohorts of autonomous agents, and Google says Flash is optimized for speed and cost — a deliberate play to push agentic workflows into mainstream use.
From search boxes to background helpers
The changes aren’t confined to the app. Google rewired Search, too: the single-line search field now stretches to accept longer, conversational queries and multimodal inputs (photos, videos, files). Google’s “AI Mode” and “AI Overviews” have already re-trained people to ask longer, context-rich questions, and the next step is letting Search build interactive, personalized micro‑apps and dashboards for recurring tasks. For many users, that will be convenient. For the businesses and creators that depend on clicks from traditional search results, it raises fresh anxieties about reduced traffic — the so-called “Google Zero” concern.
That tension surfaced repeatedly during I/O and in coverage since: generative answers can be helpful, but they also risk obscuring provenance and squeezing the web’s click economy. Google is trying to address some of those concerns with expanded transparency tools — SynthID watermarks, Content Credentials, and a SynthID detector inside Gemini — and by inviting partners to adopt watermarking. Still, critics warn that an answer that summarizes a dozen sources and returns a single call-to-action will change who benefits from search.
Where this might matter in daily life
Expect the Gemini app to become both a place to ask quick questions and a control center for background helpers. Early features previewed at I/O include Docs Live (voice-first doc creation), Ask YouTube (jump to relevant parts of videos), Google Pics for object-level image edits, and Daily Brief — a skimmable, action-oriented digest built from your calendar and inbox. If you like the idea of a digital assistant that keeps tabs on ongoing tasks, these features will feel effortless. If you value the ability to inspect many sources and choose your path, you’ll want to be mindful about when you accept an AI’s summary.
Developers and enterprises are getting tools, too: Gemini 3.5 Flash is positioned as a cheaper, faster frontier model for real workloads; Antigravity provides the scaffolding for long‑running agents; and APIs for Omni and Flash are rolling out to partners. Google also highlighted huge scale numbers — trillions of tokens processed monthly — to underscore the company’s investment in infrastructure and custom TPU chips.
