Samsung’s next foldables look set to split in two — and one may be called Ultra

Samsung’s foldable lineup is getting a little stranger, and a lot more interesting.

Fresh leaks now point to two very different Galaxy Z Fold 8 models: a familiar premium book-style fold with the “Ultra” label, and a wider version that seems designed to fix the biggest complaint about Samsung’s foldables — that cover screen. Bluetooth SIG certification has now effectively confirmed the name Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, while separate hands-on shots and dummy units have shown a second, wider device that appears to be headed for the plain Galaxy Z Fold 8 name.

The naming swap matters because it hints at Samsung’s strategy. Instead of simply iterating on one folding phone, the company may be splitting the lineup into two philosophies: one model that keeps the traditional tall shape and pushes hardware harder, and another that prioritizes usability when closed. That wider version has been leaking for weeks, and the new photos make it look less like a rumor and more like an actual product preparing for launch.

A wider Fold, a slimmer feel

The most attention-grabbing leak comes from dummy units and hands-on images that place the two phones side by side. The difference is immediate. The wider Fold 8 looks shorter and broader, with a cover display that should feel much closer to a regular smartphone. That’s a meaningful change for anyone who has ever tried to type on Samsung’s existing narrow outer screens and thought, “This would be nicer if it felt less like a remote control.”

The device also appears remarkably thin in the hand. Ice Universe says the wider Fold 8 will weigh just 201g, which would make it lighter than Samsung’s own Galaxy S26 Ultra. It’s also tipped to include a 4,800mAh battery and 45W charging, which would be a big upgrade for a foldable line that has lingered on slower charging for too long.

Samsung is clearly leaning into the thin-phone trend here. That approach has already shown up elsewhere in the company’s recent hardware, including its slim design work on the Galaxy S26 Ultra and the earlier foldable refreshes that made the Z Fold feel less bulky. The wider model seems to push that idea even further.

The Ultra keeps the classic formula — mostly

If the wider phone is the experiment, the Ultra sounds like the safer bet.

Leaks suggest the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will stick close to the existing Fold formula, but with upgraded internals and a better camera setup. The device is said to measure 4.1mm unfolded and 8.9mm folded, with a weight of 215g — essentially in line with the current Fold 7. It could also gain a larger 5,000mAh battery and 45W charging.

Camera rumors point to a triple rear system, including a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide, and a 10MP 3x telephoto lens. That would make the Ultra the obvious pick for people who want the most capable foldable Samsung can build, even if it doesn’t reinvent the shape.

By contrast, the wider Fold 8 may cut back in some areas to make room for its more radical body. That trade-off seems to be the point: better cover-screen ergonomics and a more tablet-like feel when open, even if it means less camera hardware than the Ultra.

Samsung’s naming plan is part of the story

The weirdest part of this whole leak cycle is probably the branding.

The Bluetooth SIG listing ties the SM-F976 model number to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, which lines up neatly with Samsung’s usual numbering pattern. That also leaves the wider model free to take the regular Fold 8 name, even though it’s the one that sounds the most different from Samsung’s long-running formula.

It’s a little backwards, but not entirely surprising. Samsung has been experimenting with new categories around foldables for a while, including the Galaxy Z TriFold concept and the broader push toward unusual form factors. Giving the more conventional device the “Ultra” badge may be Samsung’s way of keeping its premium buyers happy while it tests a bolder layout on the mainstream Fold name.

That said, the naming confusion is real. Even Android Central notes that the lineup is becoming harder to explain the more leaks emerge, with multiple forms, different camera setups, and a branding scheme that seems to be changing in real time.

A launch window is starting to come into focus

None of this is official yet, but the timing is looking pretty specific.

Samsung is widely expected to unveil the new foldables at a Galaxy Unpacked event in late July, with July 22 in London being the date most often mentioned. If that holds, there shouldn’t be much waiting left before the company reveals whether the wider Fold becomes the main event or just the side story.

For now, the leaks tell a pretty clear tale: Samsung is preparing a two-track foldable strategy, one that keeps the premium Fold experience intact and another that tries to fix the everyday annoyances people have complained about for years. If the wider model really does land at 201g with a bigger battery and a far more usable cover screen, it could end up being the more important phone of the two — even if the Ultra gets the fancier name.
